Leeds Townhall organ by Samplephonics
While organ music is often associated with the Baroque period (1600 to 1750) and many of the most famous organs were constructed in this period by the great makers such as Silbermann, the Victorian era also saw the creation of many organs often characterised by their scale: some of these organs are very large! Designed in a unique 'Romantic' style, the organs were often designed for large spaces. They exhibit highly expressive dynamic and tonal ranges and usually incorporate 32' pipe ranks to produce a loud bass sound appropriate for the large spaces they are installed in.
One such example of a Victorian era organ is situated in Leeds Townhall. Installed in 1858/59 and holding the record as the largest 3 manual organ in Europe, the instrument is well suited to its large hall and also incorporates highly decorative pipe ranks with intricate paintwork. Samplephonics have kindly arranged for the recording of the Leeds Townhall organ, and make the instrument available in a variety of formats, including Logic Pro EXS24 sampler, Kontakt, Ableton Live and Reason. These all share a common sample set of files, and the organ comes with 5 presets. While these are unlabelled, the following stops can be (approximately!) surmised from the sounds:
Preset 1 - Flute 8'
Preset 2 - Flute 8' 4'
Preset 3 - Principal 4' 2'
Preset 4 - Principal 8' 4' 2'
Preset 5 - Full
Preset 6 - Trumpet
The organ was sampled in painstaking detail in conjunction with the Townhall's organist: Dr Simon Lindley, and the samples themselves are done for each pipe, and each note. A truly large and detailed project, made available to all - thanks to Samplephonics for making this magnificent instrument available.
The organ is available here, and while you are at the Samplephonics site, check out their sample libraries and virtual instruments. They are all reasonably priced, and set you up instantly to create music in your preferred genre. Of particular interest is the Korg MS-20 sample and preset set. You can get the distinctive bass and leads of this classic instrument used extensively in the 80s and 90s by all the top artists - it really is the instrument of an era. The Samplephonics site is worth a visit to explore the incredibly range of sample sets, all produced to the highest quality.
